This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how we handle it. We keep it simple because privacy shouldn't require a law degree.

What we collect

When you enquire or sign up:

• Your name and email address
• Your business name and phone number (if provided)
• Industry type
• Any brief or notes you share about your business

When you pay:

• Payment is handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
• We store your Stripe customer ID and subscription status to manage your account.

When you use the wizard or admin panel:

• The content you provide for your website (text, images, logos, contact details)
• Uploaded files (photos, documents) stored on our servers

When visitors view your site:

• We do not use cookies, analytics, or tracking on customer websites unless specifically requested.
• Contact form submissions on your site are stored on our servers and forwarded to your email.

Why we collect it

• To build and host your website
• To communicate with you about your order or account
• To process payments via Stripe
• To send you important updates (billing, service changes)

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for marketing purposes. Ever.

Who has access

• Lee James (the developer) — to build, support, and manage your site
• Stripe — for payment processing only
• Resend — for transactional emails (order confirmations, link emails)
• Our hosting provider — servers are UK/EU based

No one else has access to your data. We don't use Google Analytics, Facebook pixels, or any third-party tracking on our platform.

How long we keep it

• Active accounts: Data kept for the lifetime of your subscription
• Cancelled accounts: Site data kept for 60 days after cancellation, then permanently deleted
• Enquiries: Kept until dealt with, then deleted within 12 months
• Payment records: Kept for 7 years for tax/accounting purposes (as required by UK law)

Your rights (UK GDPR)

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

• Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
• Correction — ask us to fix any inaccurate data
• Deletion — ask us to delete your data (subject to legal retention requirements)
• Portability — request your data in a standard format
• Objection — object to how we use your data

Cookies

The ownsite.co.uk website itself uses minimal cookies for essential functionality only (session management, login state). We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

Customer websites built through our service include a cookie consent bar and auto-generated privacy policy as standard.

Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS (SSL/TLS encryption). Servers are secured with firewalls, regular updates, and access controls. Passwords are stored using bcrypt hashing — we never store them in plain text.

Changes

We may update this policy occasionally. If anything significant changes, we'll email you. The date at the top tells you when it was last updated.
